fieldwork.spacecadets.love #

An experimental prototype of Fieldwork: a shared place on atproto where people meet with voice and chat, bring things from their own repositories, and use objects that carry their own interfaces and permissions. Built for Space Cadets (@spacecadets.love).

Status: experimental prototype, internal use. This repository is Space Cadets' own deployment while we find out whether the idea works. It isn't packaged, documented or reviewed for anyone else to run, and it isn't taking contributions yet. If the experiment proves fruitful, the general platform underneath (the presence engine) will be spun out as its own project.

Made by @captaincalliope.at. Issues, plans and discussion live on Tangled; the code is kept in step on GitHub and Tangled, and GitHub's issues are turned off.

What it is today #

  • The main view is an isometric room drawn with plain DOM, CSS and SVG (site/lib/spatial.js). Characters are rpg.actor sprites.
  • Voice and presence are peer to peer, with a small signal server (signal-worker/).
  • Objects are tiles: small sandboxed apps (Web Tiles) that ask Fieldwork for named powers over Cap'n Web. A tile can suggest; a person approves.
  • Sign-in uses your own atproto account, and what you keep lives in your own repository.

Where things are #

  • site/: everything that is deployed, as static files, with no app-wide build step
  • gatekeeper/: the Worker that holds roles and grants and acts as a Tangled connector (see its README)
  • signal-worker/: the signal server (signaling, relay credentials, room memory)
  • worker/: link previews for /api/*
  • tools/: scripts, the built-in tiles and the browser test suite (tools/smoke/)
